Despina Stratigakos is leading a campaign to drum up enough votes to ensure that architect is victorious in the Mattel "I Can Be" online competition that will pick Barbie's next job.

Even though Barbie is scorned by some feminists for her reality- defying figure, Stratigakos believes presenting her as an architect would inspire more young women to enter a field that still is dominated by men.

"This is a powerful icon, and it does speak to little girls," said Stratigakos, an assistant professor in UB's School of Architecture and Planning. "We need role models."

Architect, environmentalist, surgeon, news anchor and computer engineer are the five jobs voters can pick from in the contest, which runs through Wednesday at .

"An architect designs buildings and makes sure they're safe, sturdy and cool-looking," the job description reads on the contest Web site.

Over the years, jobs in the series have included baby sitter, "baby doctor," race car driver and baby photographer.

One colleague produced a "Glass Ceiling Architect Barbie," using a pregnant doll as the centerpiece.

This time, Stratigakos isn't taking any chances. She is encouraging her students, colleagues and area professionals to vote often.

The Western New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects has on its Web site a link to the "I Can Be" contest Web page.

"People can get pretty competitive about toys," Stratigakos said.

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Heidi Martinez dropped off a couple of deer heads and crossed her fingers.

The 36-year-old Tampico hunter and all-around outdoorswoman was hoping for high scores, maybe even a prize or shot at a line or two in the "Record Book for Washington's Big Game Animals."

Saturday, she brought in two buck mounts from animals she had shot as well as a seven-point elk shed she found on Chinook Pass. None of them had been judged before. But this weekend, Martinez said, "I had the time to bring them in."

She'll have to wait until this afternoon to find out how her mule deer heads and elk antlers fared. Big game heads, horns, antlers and skulls will be officially measured and scored until noon today. Then, prizes -- including Best in Show, which comes with a $250 gift certificate to Hammer's Outdoor World -- will be announced.

The Horn and Antler Competition is just one of the many goings- on at the 21st annual Central Washington Sportsmen Show. The three- day event, which began Friday, features more than 120 booths and continues through 5 p.m. today in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Event parking is free all day today. And organizer Bev Shuyler said that'll likely be a big draw on the last day of the event, which features all things outdoors -- from tents, knives and guns to boats, camouflage clothing and flyfishing gear.

Well-preserved fossils of a feathered dinosaur that lived about 125 million years ago--along with certain aspects of its teeth and skull--suggest that the turkey-sized creature was venomous.

Sinornithosaurus was unearthed in China and first described by scientists about 10 years ago, but the telling details of the creature's cranial anatomy are just now being reported, says David Burnham, a paleontologist at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Most of the teeth in each side of the creature's upper jaw have grooves that run from the base of each tooth to the tip, a characteristic seen in some of today's venomous reptiles. A large triangular depression on the creature's upper jawbone--a feature not previously reported in other dinosaurs or their relatives--probably held venom-producing glands, Burnham and his colleagues report online December 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Macao's tourist price index up 9.23 pct

MACAO, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Macao's Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the forth quarter of 2009 rose by 9.23 percent over the same period of the previous year to 158.58, according to the figures released Friday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

It was a weekend of run, fun and beer when Chennai's Hash House Harriers got together for their weekly run!

Members gathered at Kasturibai Nagar and took an interesting trail that saw them crossing bridges (literally!), cutting across uneven terrain and finally reaching their intended destination.
